Milk – A Highly Sensitive Product
Milk is the most rigorously regulated foodstuff. Raw milk can contain listeria bacteria, which can cause an illness with flu-like symptoms that can be particularly dangerous for babies. Listeria is destroyed when milk is pasteurized by heating to 150°F (65°C). All processing equipment is continuously cleaned and sterilized, including level measuring devices and pressure sensors. If such instruments are to be used for these applications, they must meet hygienic design requirements set forth by GMP, GHP, FDA or 3A Sanitary standards. All wetted parts must be made of approved inert materials and designed to provide maximum hygiene and ease of cleaning.
Pressure and Level Measurement with the VEGABAR 64
The VEGABAR 64 is particularly suitable for this application because of its front-flush CERTEC® ultra-high-purity sapphire ceramic measuring cell with surface finish Ra <0.8. This technology also makes it ideal for CIP and SIP processes. Housing options up to IP 69K even enable external cleaning with high pressure hose water.
Level Detection with the VEGASWING 61
The VEGASWING 61 is used for level detection and dry run protection. The tuning fork is highly polished for use in sensitive foodstuffs like milk and is certified according to 3A Sanitary Standards.
Milk – Dry as Dust
Milk is processed to milk powder in a drying process in which the water content of the milk is reduced to 5%/kg. Powdered milk is utilized for the production of milk products such as chocolate, confectionaries, packaged food, soups, dressings, bread, cakes and pastry. Powdered milk is also the basic ingredient of baby food.
Level Measurement in the Milk Powder Silo with the VEGAFLEX 62
Powdered milk is a basic material in food production and is stored in high stainless steel silos. The consistency as well as fat and moisture content of the powder depends on the drying process and the composition of the milk. The VEGAFLEX 62 is particularly suitable for this application because the guided microwave is completely independent of the product composition. Dust generation and buildup on the mounting socket have no effect on the measurement.
Level Detection with the VEGAVIB 65
To detect the maximum filling volume, a VEGAVIB 65 vibrating level switch is installed in the vessel. The principle of the vibrating fork effectively avoids buildup. Even with very low solid densities and changing products, VEGAVIB 65 guarantees a reliable measurement.
